Fresh Vegetables and Herbs
Our horticulture operation is conducted on 5 hectares using a combination of overhead irrigation and drip irrigation that supports open-field and greenhouse production of crops. Future expansion plans include expansion of the irrigation system as well as installation of greenhouse infrastructure to intensify production. Depending on the season, we produce the following amongst others;
- Cabbage
- Green beans
- Spring onions
- Okra
- Butternut
- Spinach
- Beetroot
- Herbs (basil) among others

Table Eggs Production
Our chicken stock all originated from some hatching eggs that we bought a few years ago. We hatch all our stock on the farm on an on-going basis. We are on our way to become a producer of high quality table and hatching eggs. When fully operational, Golden Stairs Farm will have a production capacity of 9 000 layer birds producing at least 7000 eggs a day in a fully automated and standardized production facility supported by a distribution outlet for its products. Our products are highly appreciated for their high nutritional content. We are dedicated to the finest practices in egg production and processing.

Table Eggs Production

Hatching (Fertilised) Eggs Production
Golden Stairs Farm has selected breeding stock from the best and most productive chicken breeds (Lohman Brown, Potch Koekoek, Black Austrolop and traditional African breeds, among others) for the production of fertilised hatching eggs for our customers. We also use them to produce laying (production) hens for the farm through an egg-incubation process. We produce superior quality Hatching (Fertilised) Eggs obtained from the most efficient chicken breeds widely known for their productivity. All chicks not retained for our breeding programme or for table egg production are reared as part of our free-range chicken flock that is available to the market.

At Golden Stairs we farm the best free range chickens for our customers. All hatched chicks and roosters that are not utilised for our breeding programme or table eggs production are raised as free range chicken. They grow in the healthiest and natural environment. At the right weight they are made available to the market. This enables Golden Stairs to be a provider of excellent quality, naturally reared free-range chicken at cost-effective pricing.

05.
Beef Cattle Production – Our Cows
Golden Stairs takes pride in its cattle parent breeding stock which is made up of ONLY Tuli and Bonsmara breeds. These are the only home-grown breeds produced on the farm.
Our choice of Bonsmara cattle is informed by their scientific breeding and their economical production. They are well adapted to our climate, fertile, and known for calving ease and high-quality meat. They are of calm temperament and easy to handle and suitable for use in cross-breeding.
Our choice of Tuli cattle is based on the breed being indigenous to Southern Africa with hardiness and adaptability being critical to their success in the region. Our Tuli heifers have excellent fertility, milk production and very low calf mortality. Our Tuli bulls are also known for exceptional growth, feed conversion and carcass quality. They have a unique genetic make-up which makes Tuli bulls particularly successful in cross breeding programs.
We use only pure breed Tuli bulls on our Tuli and Bonsmara heifers to achieve hybrid vigour for calves that meet our pen-fattening objectives. We continue to invest in improving the genetic pool so that we achieve the best breeding values, weaning weight, capacity, conformation, and fertility as well as the smooth red deep coat of the breeds. Each cow is identified by a unique number which is displayed on its ear tags and branded onto the top of one of its hind legs.
For pen fattening purposes, selected home-grown feeders are supplemented with feeders purchased from local farmers after they have been weaned and have adequately matured at pasture. Feeders brought in from elsewhere are not put into contact with our breeding stock. The cattle are fattened in cycles and numbers that enable us to manage our capacity and to give each animal individual medical care and attention. The feeders are pen fattened for a period of 90 to 120 days in which they increase the weight and the quality of the beef to the best grade.
We are passionate about herd management, regular evaluation, and good record-keeping and maintenance of the minimum breed standards. We genuinely care about our animals and ensure that they are well cared kept fit and healthy.

Yellow/White Maize and Soya Stock Feed Production
Maize, both yellow and white, and soybean production are a core part of the mixed operation at Golden Stairs Farm. We are proud to supply our livestock with the best locally produced food from insourced concentrates and our own locally produced supplement. Maize and Soybean are grown during summer rain season in rotation. We produce and feed the highest quality stock feed with the freshest raw materials. Maize is our mainstay for the type of agricultural operation we run. In future Golden Stairs will venture into producing its own brand of complete range of stock feed. Our priority is to produce enough feed for our livestock. Where additional feed is available this is placed on the market.
